Fell Charter School

Family Emergency Procedures

2026–27 School Year

Our priority during any emergency is the safety and well-being of every student and staff member.

Our Emergency Preparedness

Fell Charter School maintains an Emergency Operations Plan designed to help protect students, staff, and visitors during natural disasters, technological emergencies, fires, security incidents, and other emergencies. The plan is reviewed annually and emergency procedures are practiced throughout the school year.

What Families Should Do During an Emergency

  • Stay calm and wait for official information from Fell Charter School. School staff and emergency responders will focus first on student safety.
  • Monitor the school’s official communications and local media for instructions and updates.
  • Do not come to the school unless the school or emergency responders specifically instruct you to do so.
  • If an evacuation or reunification is necessary, follow the directions provided by school staff and emergency responders.
  • Bring identification if you are instructed to pick up your child. Students will be released only to a parent/guardian or another person authorized by the parent/guardian and identified through the school’s student release procedures.
  • Please do not call, text, or approach your child during an emergency if doing so could interfere with the school’s ability to account for and protect students.

If the School Is Evacuated

Students and staff may be moved away from the school building when conditions require evacuation. The school will account for students and staff and will communicate with families when it is safe and appropriate to provide additional instructions.

For safety and security reasons, specific evacuation locations and routes are not published in this family document.

If the School Is in Lockdown or Shelter-in-Place

During a lockdown or shelter-in-place situation, students and staff may be required to remain in designated areas until school administration and/or law enforcement determines that it is safe to resume normal movement.

  • Do not come to the school during a lockdown unless directed by law enforcement or school officials.
  • Do not attempt to enter the building or remove your child during a lockdown.
  • Wait for official notification that the emergency has ended and for instructions about next steps.

Student Release and Reunification

If students need to be released from school or reunited with families at an alternate location, Fell Charter School will provide instructions through its official communication channels. Please follow the designated check-out process so that the school can maintain an accurate record of every student’s release.

  • Students will be released only to authorized individuals.
  • A photo ID or other identification may be required.
  • Please be patient. Student accountability and safe reunification may take time.
  • Do not leave the designated reunification area until school personnel have completed the release process.

Communication During an Emergency

Because emergency situations can change quickly, the school may use more than one communication method. Families should rely on official school communications and local emergency authorities rather than social media rumors or unverified information.

How Families Can Help

  • Keep your emergency contact information and authorized pickup information current with the school.
  • Make sure the school can reach you or another designated emergency contact during the school day.
  • Talk with your child about the importance of following directions from teachers, administrators, and emergency responders.
  • Participate in school safety information and family meetings when offered.
